Steve, there is no built-in packet on the old commodores. What
your friend was refering to was that wonderful AEA device
called a PK-64 whch was a TNC with RTTY and other goodies, that
plugged into the catridge port and booted up with the C-64.
I bought one for a $100 8 years ago, and got many hours of
enjoyment from it. -pat

W2XO MAINTAINS A GATEWAY BETWEEN INTERNET AND PACKET. To mail
from internet to packet:
1. Mail to: "bbs@w2xo.pgh.pa.us"
2. Make the first line of the text a Packet BBS "send" command,
ie:
SP TOCALL @ BBSCALL.ROUTING-HINTS < FROMCALL
3. The "subject" line of the internet mail becomes the "title"
line of the packet BBS mail.
Any problems just send msg to W2XO Jim Durham

I know they were fairly limited in function, but a friend
of mine down on my home system asked about the Internet/Packet
gateways. I know there were two at one time ... one in
Pittsburgh and one in Arizona. Do any of you remember
what they were and how to use them?
Thanks!

How to Use the WB7TPY
Packet <-> Internet Gateway
First, some brief operational notes:
(1) Messages must not contain any foul language, or commercial purpose.
(2) Messages can only be sent to countries that the United States has
a third-party agreement. All others will be destroyed.
(3) Messages from the internet should be less then 5K in length.
No files should be sent.
(4) If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me either on
packet radio: WB7TPY@WB7TPY.AZ.USA.NA -or-
Internet : david@stat.com
(5) Have fun. Use the gateway as much as you like. That is what it is
there for.
------
From Internet to Packet
------
Send mail to the internet address of:
gate@wb7tpy.ampr.org
The first line of text must contain a full packet address, preceded with the
word "Packet:"
For example, mail to my packet address, would have the first line of text;
Packet: wb7tpy@wb7tpy.az.usa.na
** NOTE: this line MUST be left justified.
------
From Packet to Internet
------
Send as private mail (never a bulletin) to the packet address of:
gate@wb7tpy.az.usa.na
The first line of text must contain a full domained internet address,
proceeded with the word "Internet:"
For example, mail to my internet address, would have the first line of text;
Internet: david@stat.com

Better than that there is a bulletin board system written in spaghetti basic
for the 100 and I have it at home - will look for it this weekend. I've
used it on 24hr hour marathon horse races through the mountains west
of Washington DC when we were keeping track of the horses by packet
and this thing stored the messages.
I'm real busy = honk me by e-mail if you don't here anything in
a week - it will just be that I forgot.

I don't see why not. The signature text, while it is an encoding,
should be
readily "decodable" by anyone with your public key, which theoretically
the person you are communicating with, as well as anyone else who wants
it, has. Unless you were to deny someone access to your public key,
anyone who wants to can decode it using readily available software.

Is source for any of the popular packet BBSs available? I've seen W0RLI
and MSYS; rumor has it that W0RLI source isn't available (I'll send packet
mail to W0RLI this weekend), and I haven't played much with MSYS.
I'm interested in adding several minor features, and a group of us is
interested in some perhaps nontrivial additions.

Because what is a good DX spot for one geographical location is not for
another one. A DX station heard in New York may not be heard at all
in Michigan. DX Packetclusters may be linked to each other, but many
restrict the spots to a certain number of clusters away. A cluster
might be neat to have on the Internet, but you'd have to either have
everyones spots and a way to filter out only a geographical area that
represents your RF coverage at the time or have every several clusters
all over the place to be on the Internet and you connect to the one
most local to you.
A big reason to link DX clusters via the Internet is not to send DX spots
to each other but it would be to send email to each other or just chat
with another user on a distant packetcluster. Many have linked lots and
lots of packetclusters together, but usually the users will complain about
all the useless spots that they can't hear that are out of their RF
coverage.
